Greeves Riders Association logo

The purpose of this website is to introduce the Greeves Riders Association as well as providing a certain amount of info about the marque. To gain full benefit from owning a Greeves, why not join the GRA? Details of how to join can be found under 'Membership' on the left-hand side of this page. A calendar of forthcoming events is also included. Of interest to GRA members is an index of articles published in the Leading Link magazine (currently located in the 'Membership' area).
In case you are wondering where Leading Link for April, Issue No. 200 is, I will explain. The completed Leading Link was collected from the printers on March 23rd by Royal Mail! OK, it is 2nd class post but where oh where has it got to? Once we receive it and therefore know the total time it has taken our glorious Royal Mail to deliver it, we will be having words with them!

So, rest assured, it is not you or our editor (or anyone else on our side of the house) to blame but our glorious, privatised mail 'service'! Now, what was it the politicians tried to tell us? Privatisation leads to more competition, better and cheaper service and more choices! You decide!

Despite not having a live demo this year, Battlesbridge was as good (or better) than ever. The sun shone and a large number of exhibitor's and visitors made a grand day of it! Oh yes, and the GRA won the best club stand award!

Held at lower Pitts Farm, Priddy in Somerset, by kind permission of landowner Richard Masters, the Somerton Classic Club's annual event was as successful as ever! No fewer than 18 Greeves assembled at the event, far more than any other marque, including BSA and Triumph. As classic events go, this was an accurate reflection of how things were in the 60's when entries were nearly all Greeves-mounted!

Yet another highly successful Greeves gathering was held at Kidlington on Sunday, 2nd April. Beginning with the autojumble at 8 am, people eventually thinned out at about 3.30 pm, having had a great day! Plenty of friendships were renewed and money changed hands leaving many members returning home hatching plans of how they were going to sneak their goodies past the indoor financial controller! Read on to see what happened!

Welcome to the 2017 Greeves Championship season which promises to be the best yet . Thanks as always to Dave Harper our ex Greeves Factory Guru for arranging what promises to be a great seasons racing. This year we will do 13 rounds – but because there are several back to back - we will drop two rounds instead of the normal one. The race format remains with 3 races each round (races 2 and 3 to count) – if any changes they will be announced in the Greeves Forum.

This year’s event was held on Sunday, 18th December at its usual venue, Hungry Hill. Although this is a well-used piece of land, Clerk of the Course, GRA member Martin Kemp, ably assisted by another GRA member, Jeff Cooper, always manage to find some excellent sections. The weather played its part and as usual, a good time was had by all.

Held at Popham Airfield near Basingstoke, Hants, once again this proved to be a successful and well-attended event. The GRA was there in force with no less than 16 bikes and probably, the most impressive stand in the marquee with all of our banners, pictures, sail flags, etc. Just as last year, we had to overflow into the vacant pitch next door!

This event, organised by the VMCC West Kent Section and held near Maidstone in Kent proved as popular as ever. For the second year, we had a stand in the Avenue of Clubs and attracted plenty of visitors. Excellent weather ensured a good attendance on what is known as 'Public Day'.

This year, the Kendal Classic club is making a big thing of all things Greeves and who are we to diasppoint them? In response to a call for more events in the north, here is your chance to come along and diaplay your bike or better still, ride one of the events. You have road runs, an ISDT run, a trial and a scramble to chose from. A selection of former Greeves works riders is also bing rounded up so it promises to be something of a GREEVES REUNION! Read on for more details from Kim Morley.

As far as the GRA was concerned, we were not attending this year. The reasons were that Dave Harper would not be organising the Pre-65 'Demo', Battlesbridge mainstay Colin Sparrow was not available and there were still uncertainties over planning restrictions at the site. In the end, we were there and enjoyed one of the best Battlesbridge Shows yet! Read on to see what happened and why!

Yet another GRA Annual Gathering and yet another great day! Despite initially appearing that we did not have the numbers this year, the actual numbers in the hall fro the talk and AGM were up around 15% on last year. A clash with a Greeves Championship scramble did not help and quite a few of the usual suspects were noticeable by their absence!

Just for a change, the weather was kind to 'Wrighty's Show', held on February 20th and 21st. The GRA stand was in attendance, received many visitors and dispensed much help and advice. Dave McGregor's sparkling ex-Pete Lasota ISDT Challenger won 'Best Enduro' so we had someting to cheer about at the prize-giving that rounded off a great weekend!

Held on Sunday, //th February, at the usual venue of Bagshot Heath army training area, this year's event attracted 87 entries, a marked increase on recent years. Organised by the Civil Service Motoring Association, the day was blessed with excellent weather, the ground was in perfect order and a good time was had by all!

Held on Sunday, 6th December at Canada Heights in Kent and staged by the Sidcup and District MCC, this proved to be yet another great event. The weather held and with a choice of 3 routes of 20 sections to be ridden twice, a good time was had by all!

As mentioned previously, there will be an August Leading Link as normal, it has been written, has gone to the printers and we have a new editor. Although I produced this edition, as I mentioned earlier, we now have a new editor. John Henry has stepped forward to take the reigns for which I thank him very much. Now it is down to you, the members, to keep him supplied with articles! Read on for details of the August issue.

For those of you who missed the Annual Gathering, you missed a treat!

Held on Sunday, 12th April at Kiddlington near Oxford, the sun shone and the day started with much rummaging in the Greeves-orientated autojumble. A full day of activities followed and the general consensus was that the day went very well.

Despite concerns over the recent change of ownership, the Show, held on 21st and 22nd February, turned out to be even better if anything. With large crowds, particularly on the Saturday, the Show has certainly not lost any of its popularity!
Posted on 24th February 2015 by Rob
After last years poor turnout of only 35 riders, the organisers, the Civil Service Motoring Association tried a bit harder with the advertising, aided and abetted by the GRA. The result was a much better entry of 70 riders, ready to pit their wits against a course of 3 laps of 12 sections.

Organised, as usual, by the Thames MCC and named after GRA member Martin Kemp's late father, this trial attracted over 80 riders. The venue was on the sand at Hungry Hill, Aldershot and included a choice of 3 routes.

Despite earlier damp weather making the course 'interesting', a grand day out was had by all in the Kentish mud! A large entry, including a good number of Greeves, found some of the sections more of a challenge than last year!

Officially titled the Southern Classic Off Road Show & Autojumble and held on Saturday, 6th December, this was a first for the GRA and as it turned out, the Club stand was an excellent investment of our time and effort. We had an excellent turnout of exhibitors and plenty of visitors including a number of works riders.

Run by the CSMA, on Bagshot Heath, Surrey on 2nd February, this proved to be an excellent event with blue skies and sunshine, a marked contrast to the previous weekend’s Talmag! If you didn’t ride (and I didn’t), you missed a treat.

Held in brilliant sunshine, despite the weather before and after, this trial provided a chance to work off some of the Christmas excesses.
Posted on 29th December 2013 by Rob
In recent years, this trial gained a reputation as best avoided unless you fancied a day of punishment, or in modern parlance, a challenge! The organisers, Sidcup & District MCC, decided to do something about this and brought the trial back down to earth. The venue, right beside the M25 motorway in NW Kent, is best known as a motocross track of some repute but the ground surrounding the circuit is both extensive and ideal.

Organised by the Civil Service Motoring Association and held on army land at Bagshot Heath, this proved to be an excellent trial.
Posted on 3rd February 2013 by Rob
Although a 4 stroke-only trial, the GRA was well-represented by riders on machines other than Greeves. Martin Kemp was riding a very fine Matchless and then there was the ‘The 3 Enfield Mouseketeers’, messrs Dick Faggetter, Chris Brown and myself. There may well have been others.

The Telford Classic Off Road and Road race show – the largest racing show in Europe, is upon us! Morecombe “missile” John Mcguiness 19 times a TT winner and current lap record holder is the star guest.
Posted on 19th January 2013 by Rob
Despite only being a relatively small-scale show, the quality of stands and exhibits had to be seen to be believed. Although not an official GRA event, it might as well have been judging by the number of GRA members present!
Posted on 9th December 2012 by Rob
Held on Sunday, 2nd December, on a frosty but dry day, this turned out to be an excellent event. Even more Greeves turned up than were in the programme and at some of the sections, so many were parked about the place that it could have been 50 years ago!
Posted on 2nd December 2012 by Rob
Just a bit of an early warning. Thames MCC are running their annual Mike Kemp Classic trial at Hungry Hill on December 30th. This is another event at which the GRA are actively encouraging Greeves owners to get out on that bike! Note it says the easy route will be easier than last year! Having ridden myself last year, I can only say that will be no bad thing!
Posted on 28th November 2012 by Rob
Full entry for this event with 13 Greeves riders entered. If you want a day out this coming Sunday to see some Greeves in action then Canada Heights is the place to be! Located just off the M25, junction 3, it is conveniently reached from a wide area.

Book review
'Out FRONT' and OUT NOW!! New motocross book from Panther Publishing. I now have a copy of 'Out Front', just arrived and have only had a quick glance at it. However, I can confirm that it is excellent! It is written quite differently to Paul Stephen's book. His is written by year, well supported by pictures. 'Out Front' is written on the basis of a biography for each of the stars featured.

Alan Wright’s Classic Offroad Show report
Alan Wright’s Classic Offroad Show, held at the International Centre, Telford over the weekend 13/14th February more than lived up to expectations. The three exhibition halls were packed with machinery on display, club and trade stands together with assorted autojumble, not to mention various event organisers. For those heroic enough to brave the elements, there was also a carpark at the front of the buildings devoted to yet more autojumble.

Telford Off-Road Show to see unveiling of new Greeves trials machine
Richard Deal is again unveiling his latest 'new Greeves' at Alan Wright’s Telford Classic Off-road Show. This will be a heavily modified version of the bike revealed at the same event last year. During the past 12 months, a number of the criticisms have been re-worked and improved. An example is the new position of the fuel tank, now mounted behind the gearbox.
